I walk in honour of my dad, Maurice Perez, and in memory of Wendy Corber, my friend's mom.
What is ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)?
A truly horrific disease that lacks a cure and the funding to find one. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to the afflicted's demise. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, people may lose the ability to speak, eat, move and breathe.
My dad has had ALS for the past 7 years. I have been his primary caregiver with the help of my sisters, the CLSC, and wonderful nurses/doctors.
The funds raised through this walk go towards funding both research for a cure and helping ALS patients and their families.
